Having survived the first two installments of Dream Theatre’s annual Halloween offering—20-minute creepfests in which (un)lucky audience members must play the show’s endlessly victimized lead—perhaps I’m inured to this year’s characteristic discomfiture. I was 12-year-old Angel, trapped at an onstage kitchen table with my drunk, traumatized mother when a group of marauding religious fanatics broke in, pinned her down inches from me, and began drilling holes in her spine. In previous years Audience Annihilated made me want to crawl out of my skin; this year I could’ve watch mom get slaughtered all night. But it’s not just me. This year creator/director/performer Jeremy Menekseoglu and his crazed coven proceed with a lighter touch, allowing the ordeal to be good inappropriate fun. —Justin Hayford
