Dream Theatre Company's The Devilish Children (and the Civilizing Process) is officially HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by the Chicago Reader! "the 50-minute production is unique and compelling nonetheless, thanks to giddily savage performances, inventively staged violence, and delightfully weird touches" View the full review at the link above, or see the full text below: The Devilish Children (and the Civilizing Process)
When: Through 5/23: Fri-Sun 8 PM Price: $20 Jeremy Menekseoglu's irony-drenched morality play, first produced in 2010, was inspired by Heinrich Hoffman's 1845 children’s book Der Struwwelpeter, in which a series of grotesque punishments are meted out for mildly naughty infractions like thumb sucking and fidgeting. In Menekseoglu’s version, these cautionary fables are acted out by a bunch of underage sadists for the benefit of three-year-old Little Karl (a winningly guileless Madelaine Schmitt), whose father has dumped him at a school for wayward kids. There's nothing new about the play’s critique of 19th-century-style authoritarian childrearing. But the 50-minute production is unique and compelling nonetheless, thanks to giddily savage performances, inventively staged violence, and delightfully weird touches such as the arrival of Father Christmas to supply a happy ending. —Zac Thompson Comments are closed.
